Noel Clycq focuses in his research on internalisation and diversification of education and learning in an era of globalisation. Key topics he is interested in are (ethnic) diversity, identity formation, educational (in)equality, and the interplay between agency and structure.
His research explores the role of educational actors (pupils and students, parents, teachers, school management, and policy makers) in addressing obstacles in education and learning. Several projects study the socialization role of formal and informal education through citizenship education, emotions of belonging and bottom-up community schools. He is also interested in ways of fostering youth’s wellbeing and the recognition of various (non-dominant) forms of capital and resources and how these can support youth in their learning.
Next to these topics he considers the role of teachers as crucial and is interested in research fostering teacher’s agency and their positive impact on the learning processes of youth. He believes solidarity and strong partnerships between various educational stakeholders, inside and outside of mainstream education, is necessary in times of ongoing globalisation, internationalisation and rapid diversification.
